The “N” Word

Why Obama’s N-word was Shocking

From the article:

He said what?

On the face of it, President Barack Obama’s use of the ‘N’ word in an interview released Monday seems out of character for a man who has made strenuous efforts to avoid provocative statements on race and to ensure that the color of his own skin does not dominate his presidency.

Personally, I think the writer of this article has forgotten a few things. The most glaring example of a provocative statement was when President Obama said that the Officer/Cambridge Police Department who arrested his friend, Henry Louis Gates was  “behaving stupidly”.  Turned out he wasn’t “behaving stupidly” he was doing his j-o-b.

Has the President made efforts to avoid provocative statements? IMO, hardly, lol.

The fact that he said the word “nigger” in the context that he did…isn’t shocking to me. He wasn’t calling anyone names. Or, being vulgar.

It didn’t shock or upset me. I never expected anyone to call him on it. I was wrong. Unfortunately, I expect it to get blown all out of proportion. This is the one time that it shouldn’t happen. But it probably will.

I am particularly sensitive to this word because my youngest son is mixed (black/white). Would I be upset if someone called him that? Yes. I’d like to believe I’d hold my tongue? To tell the truth that probably wouldn’t happen. Are there exceptions? Yes…

CNN’s Don Lemon Debates With Analyst Over Obama’s Use Of The N-Word!

I agree with Don Lemon that context determines whether you use the word or not. His use of it would be in relating to a news story. If it is part of a story then it’s okay to use the word as in an explanation. Should the word be sanitized in this case. No. I think that this is reasonable.

Remember this?…

Harvard Professor Jailed; Officer Is Accused of Bias

From the article:

Colleagues of Henry Louis Gates Jr., Harvard’s most prominent scholar of African-American history, are accusing the police here of racism after he was arrested at his home last week by an officer investigating a report of a robbery in progress.

Now…remember this?

Cambridge Cops: Panel to Review Gates Case

From the article:

Cambridge Sgt. James Crowley has taught a class about racial profiling for five years at the Lowell Police Academy after being hand-picked for the job by former police Commissioner Ronny Watson, who is black, said Academy Director Thomas Fleming.

As it turned out the officer that was accused of being bias taught a class about racial profiling. Basically, how to do your job without profiling. Oops. Big Oops.

Then of course, the President had to make “nice” and invite both men to the White House to have a beer. Remember that?
